Oyster Reef Cleanup

Oyster Reef Cleanup
Posted on 07/03/2019
The Ecology Club worked with the Nansemond River Preservation Alliance to clean oyster floats.  Our club helps to maintain oyster gardens in Chuckatuck and in Northern Suffolk.  In the summer we pull the floats out of the water and sort the baby oysters by size.  The ones that are large enough to make it on their own (basically the ones big enough to eat) are moved to the oyster reef.  The ones that still need to grow are placed back in the floats after we clean them.  The barnacles have to be removed from the floats because they make them heavy and could cause them to sink.  We also clean all of the silt from the oysters and from the floats and repair anything that is broken.   Students from all three high schools participated.  The club will be working at the Northern Suffolk location on the July 10th. They will also be teaching Environmental Science at KFMS on the 25th of July.
