Last week Mrs. C. Boone, History teacher, arranged for Maia Chaka to visit and speak to her classes.  Ms. Chaka is the first African American woman to become a referee for the NFL.  She made a career officiating college football and is a health and physical education teacher in Virginia Beach public schools.  She joined the NFL's Officiating Development Program in 2014.  Her first game was September 12, 2021 between the Carolina Panthers and the New York Jets.    A quote on npr.org reads, "This historic moment to me is an honor and it's a privilege that I've been chosen to represent women and women of color in the most popular sport in America, proving that I can defy the odds and overcome."  She spoke to the students about overcoming adversity and fulfilling her dreams.
