Brave the Shave Fundraiser in Mrs. Starling's Class

After reading a non-fiction news article related to the death of 19 year old college football player, Collin Sather, and having the students summarize the article, Mrs. Starling saw how moved the students were by his life and death. Some students expressed how they wish they could make a difference. Mrs. Starling decided to put those words into action. Since students are in the process of learning about persuasive writing and the power of words, students will be writing persuasive letters to community businesses in order to gain awareness of the fundraiser, politely attempting to persuade people to donate or spread the word about the fundraiser. Students are learning that writing isn't just about literature, but writing has the power to make positive change in people's lives, and that's worth learning!

Acting in solidarity, Mrs. Starling will shave her head to raise awareness of childhood cancer and raise funds for the Brave the Shave Fund and Andrew McDonough Be Positive (B+) Foundation.

How long does the fundraiser run? The webpage will be active until April 13th. Our goal is to raise $500. Donations can be made on a group’s webpage or can be given to Mrs. Starling to send in.

The dual purpose of this lesson is to to raise funds for the Brave the Shave Family Fund and Andrew McDonough Be Positive (B+) Foundation, who both help support families with children that have childhood cancer and to teach students that their words have the power to change the world.  Brave the Shave is on a mission to fight childhood cancer through family support and research.  It will also be a lesson in character education through giving, (whether it be monetary, through outreach, or donation of their hair).
