Student Checklist for Classroom Rules and Procedures
Virginia and United States History & World History 1 2008-2009 School Year
EXPECTATIONS
BASIC REQUIREMENTS AND RULES FOR THE CLASS:
1. Show and give respect to classmates, teachers, and everyone’s property. 2. Students are to be on time with their books, notes, and other supplies for class every day. 3. Open food containers and beverages are not allowed. (No eating or drinking) 4. Cell phones are allowed, but must be turned off (not on silent or vibrate modes) and out of sight. If turned on or in sight, they will be confiscated and turned in to the office. The same is true of portable music devices. 5. Blue or black ink only – no other colors, or pencils. Also, no glitter or other specialty pens/ink. 6. Students are required to keep returned work, along with daily notes and other assignments, to be kept in a 3-ring binder and arranged chronologically. This provides a solid basis for study and review, especially for mid-term and final exams. 7. Ask questions, especially if you are confused or don’t know. 8. Spelling and Grammar count!
Resources: The Americans (text), U.S. Government (text) and any other supplemental materials required by the teacher prior to a unit discussion.
Grading and Evaluation: Tests: 40%-----Quizzes: 30%-----Class Work: 20%-----Homework: 10%
Progress Reports: Progress reports will be issued on the dates selected by Suffolk Public Schools. Progress reports will not be issued earlier than those dates unless requested by a parent/guardian or school official. The teacher will not issue early progress reports to students. Students should not ask the teacher at any time to print a progress report.
Assignment Due Dates: All assignments are due at the beginning of class the day it is due. Work handed in by the beginning of the next time class meets earns, at maximum, half-credit. All work handed in thereafter receives no credit, regardless of quality. No make up assignments will be allowed once all students have received their work. Should a student be present at any time on the due date of an assignment, the assignment is to be turned in on that date. This applies to field trip days. Computer glitches or breakdowns will not be accepted as an excuse for not having or completing an assignment on time.
Academic Integrity: Please understand that I have zero tolerance for cheating and expect all students to do their own work on all assignments (including homework) unless specifically authorized by the teacher to work/consult with others. Remember that it is much easier to repair a damaged grade than to redeem a damaged reputation!
Plagiarism: Definition (as provided by dictionary.com): the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. If a student is caught plagiarizing an assignment, he/she will receive a “0” zero for the assignment, a phone call home to the parent/guardian and a written referral. This is very serious and I do not permit it in my classroom. If a student is unsure as to whether or not he/she has plagiarized then he/she probably has done so. Please check with the teacher.
Absenteeism and Make-Up Work: Grades and academic progress are unquestionably affected by absenteeism and students are strongly advised not to miss classes. However, if one cannot avoid being absent, he/she must make up the missed work (tests and reports) by the second class period back to school with a legitimate excuse. Students are also responsible for inquiring about class activity due to their absence.
More on Absenteeism: The two (2) day time span for making up tests in case of illness or family death does not apply to any other reason for being absent. Unless students are out for illness or family death, work is due upon returning to school. Missing test reviews (except for illness or death in the family) are not acceptable reasons to postpone taking a test. A note must be provided by the parent or guardian in order for the student to be exempt from taking the test the day they return to school.
Make-Up Work: In case of a conflict between teachers regarding a student make-up time, work should be done in order of classes. For example, the teacher of the students first class on the day he/she was absent should have priority over getting the missed work first.
Extra Credit: Extra credit is given at the discretion of the teacher, and is counted as an additional grade rather than “free points” to an existing grade. Extra credit is only offered to students who have completed all of their regular assignments. Students who have an A average will not be given extra credit work.
Restroom and Clinical Visits: I ask that you visit the restroom before or after class. Our room is close to the restrooms, so this should not be a problem. However, emergencies do occur; therefore, each student is allotted 4 Bulldog passes each semester. Once all passes have been used, the student may not use the bathroom during class. If necessary, I will give you a pass to the clinic, but if possible, please ask at the beginning or end of class.
