Un poco de Señora Hicks (a little about Mrs. Hicks) |

I have had the good fortune of having the opportunities to travel outside of the United States and to experience the rich culture of others. After graduating high school with honors, I went on to college only to have to leave after 1 semester due to financial restraints. Not long after, I decided to join the United States Navy as a radioman. This decision was one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made. I went to Florida for bootcamp, California for “A” school and then onto my 1st duty station at Thurso, Scotland. At the young age of 18 years old, I saw myself onto a bus to NYC, onto another bus to La Guardia airport and onto an international flight heading ultimately for Scotland. Talk about an experience. I loved my time in Scotland, even though it was brief. I even got to see the Queen Mum up close when she came to see the Mey (yes, that’s spelled correctly) games. This is where I met my husband and gave birth to my first daughter. From there the Navy took me to South Carolina, Spain, Maine, New Jersey and ultimately here to Virginia. I started back at the University of Maine at Machias and finished up at Virginia Wesleyan College where I graduated Magna Cum Laude and became a member of the Hispanic National Honor Society. While at Virginia Wesleyan College I had the awesome opportunity to take a community service trip to the Dominican Republic to help out at an orphanage there for one week through Orphanage Outreach. Although we didn’t have hot water, basically slept outside, could not put the toilet paper in the toilet and could only drink and brush our teeth with bottled water, I would not have changed that experience for anything. I recommend it to anyone!
