Credit:  One

Overview:  Students will follow a multi-purposed program emphasizing the four strands of the Standards of Learning: oral language, reading/literature, writing, and research.  Emphasis is placed on correct usage, reading for understanding, and mastery of paragraph writing, and short composition.  Practical skills are taught through units in test-taking strategies, completion of employment and school applications, and writing of business correspondence.  Basic research methods and the use of research materials are refined through completion of a research paper.

1. Discuss rules and regulations

2. Review ‘my space” oral introduction project

3. Compose a one page essay responding to the prompt given.

SEPTEMBER 4-5—Thursday/Friday

1. Complete worksheet covering pages 4-17 of your textbook

2. Pictures

SEPTEMBER 8-9—Monday/Tuesday

1. Oral introductions

2. Distribute textbooks

1. PowerPoint presentation of the Anglo-Saxon Period

2. Discuss of the significance of key items such as: Christianity, unification, pagan beliefs, etc.

1. Complete Quick-write p. 20

2. Discuss qualities of a hero.

3. Begin reading “Beowulf” Part I pp. 21-28

4. Distribute handout of the literary terms used during the 1st nine weeks

1. Finish reading “Beowulf” Part I, “from Grendel”, and “Life in 999: A Grim Struggle” pp. 21-31

2. Answer Comprehension Questions 1-10

3. Class discussion of reading selections

4. Review for quiz on the background of the Anglo-Saxon period

5. Distribute agendas, and pacing guides

1. Turn in Comprehension Questions 1-10 from last class.

2. Take Quiz on the Political and Social Milestones on the Anglo Saxon Period

3. Read “Beowulf” Part II and “The Fury of the Northmen” pp.  33-39

4. Answer Questions 1-9 p. 40

1. Turn in HW—”The Seafarer”

2. Complete assignment for SAT vocabulary list one.

3. Read pp. 46-47 & complete QW p. 47.

4. Read “Gilgamesh” pp. 48-53 (possible quiz on this selection at the end of class)

1. Turn in HW—SAT vocabulary list one

2. Read pp. 46-47 & complete QW p. 47.

3. Answer any student’s question about  “Gilgamesh” prior to quiz

4. Quiz on “Gilgamesh”

1. Complete grammar practice—on overhead

2. Read “The Iliad” pp.  55-66.

3. Read “Trojan Gold” pp. 67-68.
