Mrs. Ford, a graduate of Smithfield High School, had taught business education at Nansemond River High School for thirteen years, and she was named Suffolk's Professional Technical Studies Teacher of the Year in 1999.

A graduate of Hampton Institute, Mrs. Ford worked at the former Sovran Bank as an administrative assistant and auditor.
